SDGs and COVID-19

This challenge invites you to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by looking at the current and ongoing change in the monitoring indicators of the UN SDGs using Earth observation/remote sensing and global Earth system model-derived analysis products.

Real time open-data analyzer over COVID-19 circumstances and how it affects SDGs.

Summary

We work with open data, processing, and making it easier for everyone to enjoy it, be it only by looking up at our charts or consuming the data using our API.

  • How we addressed the challenge

We intend to present the user with an easy way to access data about COVID-19 circumstances and its impacts on the SDGs. The data has been processed in a way to be more user-friendly and easy to access and be shared. For this purpose, we developed an API and a website using National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), World Health Organization (WHO), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and United Nations (UN) databases, creating charts and tables that can be easily understandable.

To address this challenge we created a prototype using two SDGs that we considered to be the most affected by the pandemic, them being SDG 3 (health and well-being) and SDG 6 (availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation). For analyzing the impact into those SDGs we gathered most of the data from the UN and NASA and displayed both data in an integrated way in graphics and charts.

  • More specification upon the chosen SDGs:

SDG 3.5.2 - Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol.

SDG 3.7-  By 2030, ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services, including for family planning, information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programs.

SDG 3.9- By 2030, substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water, and soil pollution and contamination.

SDG 6.1 - By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all.

SDG 6.2 - By 2030, achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs.

SDG 6.4 - By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.

SDG 6.5 - By 2030, implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate.

How We Developed This Project

  1. Inspiration: We want to help the world to overcome this pandemic and we decided that the SDGs topic was a very important step toward the solution.
  2. Approach to developing the project: First we researched about the SDGs and what their specification. After we gathered information about how the pandemic could affect the SDGs we chose (SDG 3 and 6). Finally, we processed the raw data and make more easy to access and understand.
  3. Tools: Flask, Swagger editor, gitHub, Heroku, Bootstrap.
  4. Coding languages: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python.
  5. Hardware: Computers, Cellphones.
  6. Software: Visual Studio Code, Pycharm, Postman, Github Desktop, Photoshop.
  7. Problems and Achievements: some of the challenges that we faced were linking the correct data we wanted with the specific SDG and also some coding learning for the API features. As for the achievements now the team have a better understanding of coding, search methods, gathering and processing. Also a better understanding of the SDGs .
