SDGs and COVID-19

This challenge invites you to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by looking at the current and ongoing change in the monitoring indicators of the UN SDGs using Earth observation/remote sensing and global Earth system model-derived analysis products.

Summary

When analyzing socio-economic problems due to a Covid-19 pandemic, our challenge aims to collect data and processes strategically, to enable productive, scientific, analytical and conclusive results, for anyone who wish to use as as a way to address problems throughout the context of the project and which public or private sectors to visually obtain control over the socio-economic scope of their interest or need. The processing of secure data means that whoever possesses it, is able to control or obtain greater possibilities at its own fingertips, what are the same requirements to restructure and create security strategies for a post-pandemic.

How We Addressed This Challenge

In order to carry out the project, we used the SDG 11-Sustainable Cities and Communities as areas of interest, guided by goal 11.5. The problem to be faced by our project is the high levels of unemployment, caused by measures to contain the contamination of Covid-19. We think that as a way of directing public and private policies to foster job creation, it is necessary to first mitigate the problem.

How We Developed This Project

What motivated us to choose this challenge was the opportunity to contribute to society our ideas of making the world 1% fairer.

We believe that we can not only win our victories and isolate ourselves from the world, but we must win our dreams and through our victories contribute for others to be victorious too.

We believe that our project fits the challenge because the ideas we developed were designed with the needs that the world is currently facing.

We use the analytical approach of the data made available by space agencies, to detect indicators of human activity, correlating with data made available by Brazilian agencies and companies related to unemployment in previous periods, GDP and growth trends in the country.

Using NASA's Landsat-8 satellite image analysis and ESA's Sentinel-2 series analysis, to identify clusters on targets larger than 10m using bands 2, 3, 4, 8A in the range of visible light on the satellite Landsat 8 Sentinel and Panchromatic Band 8 for targets over 15m in size.

Alternatively, we use Landsat bands 1 and 8 of Sentinel to detect aerosols in the atmosphere, which can cause pollution, and consequently human activity.

Another tool was the TIR ASTER sensors on the NASA and JAXA Terra satellite and the TIR Landsat sensors, to identify heat zones, which can be interpreted as zones of human and machine activity, indicating agglomerations.
