Where There’s a Link, There’s a Way

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, there has been a proliferation of websites and portals developed to share resources about the topic. Your challenge is to find innovative ways to present and analyze integrated, real-time information about the environmental factors affecting the spread of COVID-19.

crapIN - An app to make waste discard easier and prevent global impacts

Summary

Our issue: During the current pandemic, in Brazil, statistics reveal an increase of 15% to 25% of residential waste and an increase of 10 to 20 times for hospital waste.Our solution: As a way of combating the great increase in the production of waste, we propose crapIN, an app in order to facilitate the treatment of waste (hospital and residential) and predict the possible impacts, quantifying and organizing cooperatives to supply the demand that is currently being met incorrectly, in order to guarantee the circular economy. In long term we want to accelerate population's awareness for disposal of waste.Know us better on:https://www.instagram.com/crapin.2pi/

How We Addressed This Challenge

The project adresses directly this challenge because we proposed an innovative way to present and analyze integrated real-time information about the environmental factors. Through an application, we focused in a big world problem: trash. During the pandemic, it was more evident that this is a growing issue. Our app is connected with Nasa resources, such as: Methane and Co2 emissions, massive growing of 'garbage islands'  and climate changes intensified by global warming.

Our proposal is to make possible a combination of information in real time with the user's actions. Therefore, we use the tools of Machine Learning and IoT (Internet of Things) in order to make available, in a standard way, the contributions of the individual in relation to the emission rates of methane gas, carbon dioxide, and the consequences on climatic variations, mainly the progress of global warming.

How We Developed This Project

We chose the challenge "Where there's a way, there's a link", because technology has a lot of room  to be explored and the most inovation option nowadays. Our approach to developing this project was focused on a specific global problem, that was just intesified by pandemic of Covid-19 and after this crisis will continue being a problem.In the future, we want to deploy the app as a way to connect the three customer focuses: Trash makers (individuals, companies, hospitals, etc), collectors/cooperatives and partners interested in promoting eco friendly culture, in order to maintain a cyclical and sustainable economy for the environment, besides causing a mobilization and a new cultural form involving more and more conscious individuals throughout the evolution of the app.

Database:
In order to ensure user engagement, the application relies on a NASA database of CO2, methane emissions, monitoring of garbage islands in the oceans, climate and global warming monitoring to generate individual statistics of each user's contribution within the platform, promoting a ranking in form of gaming, with rewards in discounts provided by partners (public and private).

- Reception of available data (NASA);
- Reception of user data;
- Data processing;
- Machine learning to find a pattern of consumption and user behavior;
- Garbage production forecast;
- Neural network to estimate the user's impact in favor of the environment (waste refuse vs. NASA data).

Built with:
- Wix.com: an online website creator and editor platform that allows users to create HTML5 and Mobile sites;
- Adobe Photoshop: development and creation of professional images;
- Adobe Premiere: progress and video editing for the pitch creation;
- CorelDraw: used for graphic design and vectorization of images;
- Microsoft Office package (Excel, Word, Power Point): Structure and organization in order to systematize the development stages.

Our achievements were positive feedbacks and approvations given by mentors and the devolepment of new ideas. Our problems were lack of specific knowledge in some areas, as software creation.
