Remote AI Assisted Mental Health Support Application

Summary

During COVID-19, most of the technological interventions are concerned with preventing the virus from spreading, very little has done on mental health issues. The existential fear and a looming unknown future due to COVID-19 creates relentless mental health issues.So we are developing an amazing mental health support app which can be operated in most of the languages of the world so that most of the people get support for their mental health issues remotely.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Covid-19 is affecting operations in remote locations such as space, sea, remote operations center and have behavioral and psychological impacts. This may cause different mental health related problems like PTSD, trauma, stress or anxiety. In remote locations like space, it’s not possible to avail direct mental health supports. We are developing a unique AI based mental health support CHATBOT which will provide support in the most common languages like English, Bangla, Mandarin, Spanish, Portuguese and so on. So individual will get support in his own interested language. At present there is no such AI based app or program which is able to provide mental health support in most common languages. Moreover, there are many people who prevent themself from seeking mental health treatment as this may treated as social stigma in his/her location. Our app will be of great aid to them.   The app will contribute to fostering empathy and humanitarian behavior within developing community. This problem will rise during and post COVID-19 time. So, the application will have direct impact on the life of people who will be facing mental health illness.Moreover, the app is gender responsive, which will help both male and female on their particular mental health issues.

How We Developed This Project

To solve mental health issues during COVID-19 pandemic our application was developed.If someone is having traumatic stress, feeling lonely, anxious, depressed or obsessed with contamination during this pandemic, then he/she can use this  application and will get mainly four services. These are “Self-Care”, “Mukto Mon chat bot”, “Call for Doctor” and “Authentic Source of Information”. On the basis of conceptual diagram and UML design, a prototype was designed using the Balsamiq Mockups 3 software. After finalizing the prototype, the main development of the  application was started. Android studio was used to design the UI of this application. Our application has 3 main sections to design the UI for this section and to perform actions JAVA programming language was used. (1)In the “Self-care” section, anyone can have virtual therapy through voice and video. Here some virtual therapies which can be provided from this app are  : Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy,Emotion-Focused Therapy,Family Therapy, Group Therapy: Interpersonal Therapy,Mindfulness-based Therapies,play Therapy,Psychodynamic Therapy, Psychotherapy for Parents and Young Children. (2)In the Chat bot, it can detect if any user have any mental health issue like stress, loneliness, anxiety, depression through textual conversation and after detecting, it can suggest therapy which can be found in the Self-care section.IBM Watson assistant was used to build this chat bot.After logged in to the IBM cloud, then using their IBM Watson assistant, user's and chat bot’s responses are handled by adding proper intents and dialogs respectively. Assistant ID, API key and URL are integrated to the application. This will activate the  app. After finishing chatting with chat bot, some data are sent to database for data analysis keeping user's privacy in mind. Admins can fetch data from database to create CSV file and store in repository. Data analytics team use this data to train the chat bot. After logged in to the IBM cloud, then using their IBM Watson studio, CSV file is uploaded in repository and in data analysis section, Jupiter notebook is used.  (3)In the “Authentic Source of Information” section, anyone can find real and authentic information, so that there is no chance of being confused by fake news. These information’s can be of different types, such as, exact information of infected people around the world, different rates like infected rate, death rate etc., how to work from home to earn money or how to study from home, where to seek any help during this pandemic, which organizations are giving home services etc.

We have used publicly available NASA datasets for implementing psychological supports through CHATBOT. We used machine learning for utilizing the datasets and provide better chatting experience for personnel remaining in remote places.So, this is how our  application has been developed.
