Summary

Our team's focus during Nasa SpaceApps Challenge is to categorize which side effects of COVID-19 are affecting isolated communities through satellite sensors. For this solution become true, an improvement in LiDAR technology to human monitoring will be the core point of our project. Combining LiDAR concepts with infra-red sensors, it'll be able to collect the geographical data from an isolated community and upload this information on our API, supporting the local government agencies to provide all necessary resources for subsistence.

How We Addressed This Challenge

While we experience such intense social isolation, deliver essential items as a simple medical aid in remote areas has become even more complex. Some side effects brought by this situation are the local community's exposition to disease misinformation, high infection rates, or even deaths, and psychological issues.

Space Sapiens represents an opportunity, a bond between remote monitoring and government agencies that clarify how many people are isolated and their locations as analyze the most strategic way to deliver human resources and medical aids as well.

Therefore, our API isn't invasive in data collecting. It doesn't require to interfere on a local community's cultural system. Besides, remote monitoring also allows a region to be examined without a physical presence, making logistics easier.

How We Developed This Project

The challenge of measuring side effects caused by COVID-19 pandemic in remote locations led our team to design contactless mapping solutions for safety reasons, so primitive cultures would be preserved in cases of infection. While researching the availability of potential networks, we realized that Bluetooth and the mobile network didn’t meet our expectations. Bluetooth has a limited range and cell phone access restricts the low-income population. On the other hand, satellite connections provide great database access without attaching to paid internet-devices like mobiles.

Data & Resources

NASA's database captured by satellites is essential to help identify isolated communities. On Space Science API development, NASA WorldWind and MOPITT databases were consulted for geolocation references and history comparison from 2017 to 2019. The future outcomes are going to be registered in a local database and, lately, posted on our website - which government agencies are allowed to access and download these reports for decision-making analysis.
