The Art of It All

What have you learned about yourself or the world as a result of living through the COVID-19 pandemic? Your challenge is to express your experience of living through this historic time through a work of art.

Data Traces, the

Summary

Data are becoming surrogates of our existence! My idea for this art/data challenge is to create a video-sound installation rendering Earth/Human transformations during the pandemic using satellite data. For the final product I envision the installation to be connected in real time to the satellite data, and shown online and/or in a physical art space on large led panels running along the entire perimeter of a dark room in which the audience can have an immersive experience.

How I Addressed This Challenge

I  first extracted and calculated spatio-temporal statistics from satellite data. For this challenge I used multidimensional Air Quality pre-pandemic and pandemic data  from NASA OMI/Aura products. Then I  used these data to create an audio art video showing the sequence of signals and events from data.

How I Developed This Project

The inspiration came from the fact that data are becoming essential for the human survival.  I used python to extract summaries and statistics of Air Quality pre-pandemic and pandemic data  from NASA OMI/Aura products. And used Processing to make the video installation. The main problem was time. I think the main achievement is to have learned more about satellite data and the inspiration for future art projects using data science and satellite data .
