IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS
As you begin your Space Apps COVID-19 Challenge journey, we encourage you to keep the following information in mind. For a more comprehensive guide, please consult the Space Apps COVID-19 Challenge Participant FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) and other guides (on the chat platform, on team formation, on project submission, and on judging and awards). These are located on the Space Apps resources page and on your user dashboard under "Materials".
- Register for a region to participate: You will not be able to participate in the hackathon until you have registered for a region. Please click the "Register Now" button on this page to register for this region or to create a Space Apps account (if you do not already have one). You can change your region in the user dashboard, once you have created an account, by selecting "Change Region." Registration will be open through the end of the event. We encourage all participants to create accounts and register for a region at least one week before the hackathon in order to join the chat rooms, form teams, and build your project submission pages over the course of the weekend.
- Connect with your Local Leads: This page contains contact information for your regional “Local Leads” -- Space Apps volunteers from your region who can answer your questions and help connect you to potential teammates prior to the hackathon. Please reach out to them as you prepare for the hackathon!
- Save the date: The hackathon will begin Saturday, May 30 at 9:00 AM local time, when you and your team will be able to submit projects. The hackathon will end on Sunday, May 31 at 11:59 PM local time. If your team spans multiple time zones, your project must be submitted in accordance with the local time of the member in the latest time zone. To save other important dates, please see the Participant FAQ.
- Recruit friends: We encourage you to invite your friends along! Typical Space Apps teams have 2-6 participants (the limit is 6 members per team). Space Apps is all about collaboration and the most successful teams are often ones with a diverse set of skills and expertise -- coding, storytelling, creativity, data, science, engineering, technology, and more.
- Connect with the community through the Space Apps Virtual Bootcamp: Tune in to our Bootcamp and social media to access exclusive content from NASA, its partner agencies, and Local Leads and Space Apps Ambassadors. Guests provide data workshops; tips for having a successful hackathon experience; and updates about what Earth science specialists around the world are doing to understand and tackle COVID-19.
- Pick a challenge: Browse the 12 challenges and decide which one you want to solve. Recommended data can be found by clicking "Example Resources."
- Join the chat rooms:Space Apps Chat is open! The chat rooms consist of regional channels, where you can connect with Local Leads and search for teammates. There are also challenge channels, where you can connect with Subject-Matter Experts (SMEs) and Space Apps Ambassadors starting on May 30. They will be available to answer your questions about the challenges and the data! Click here to see the Chat Guidelines.
- Request to join a team: You can create your own team or request to join an existing team. To join an existing team, browse the teams that have been created from the challenge page of your choice. Look for teams with the flag that says, "Looking for Members." When you find one you like, click “Join Team” on the Members tab and then “Ask to Join [Team Name]." This will open a chat message between you and the team's creator, who will be able to send you an invitation code. See the Team Formation Guide for a step-by-step guide.
- Submit a project: Once you've formed your team, start solving! Describe how you developed your project. Tell us about the data you used. Share a demonstration of your project. All of the project submission requirements can be found in the Project Submission Guide.
- Awards: Space Apps is all about collaboration and problem solving. However, we do offer awards to the most promising projects. See the Judging and Awards Guide for details.
