The Art of It All

What have you learned about yourself or the world as a result of living through the COVID-19 pandemic? Your challenge is to express your experience of living through this historic time through a work of art.

Too Much Space

Summary

During Quarantine, many have felt feelings similar to those of astronauts who are in space for extended periods of time. Despite having things to do, it feels very isolated and lonely. To depict this, we have drawn a singular room surrounded by the infinite bounds of space. It's difficult to go out and do things. While having time to yourself is sometimes beneficial, it can be isolating if it goes on for too long. The astronaut suit represents the current need for masks and gloves. Much like astronauts, it is recommended for people to only go out if it's absolutely necessary. In addition, they must wear protective gear to keep themselves and others safe.

How We Addressed This Challenge

As Highschool students, Covid-19 has impacted us both socially and academically. Since the pandemic, our schools have been shut down, our learning has been slowed down, and our end of the year traditions have been canceled. This project will address this challenge by depicting an image that is commonly found in everyday homes. We are isolated and have very little access to the outside. Though we have protective equipment, it's only for necessary outings, not meeting friends and family. We were inspired by the color of the astronauts' spacesuit being white due to the fact that white is typically used to represent isolation, and as astronauts, they spend most of their time in space away from their loved ones. We were inspired by stories of astronauts feeling lonely in space, which is why we made the room floting in space. It also represents COVID-19 well because we are advised to stay more than 6 feet away from others.

How We Developed This Project

Our artistic creativity and unique perception of problem-solving inspired us to choose this challenge. Since we all see ourselves as more artistic and complex thinkers the challenge better suited our strengths and helped developed our weaknesses. Since the pandemic has separated us into our homes, the approach we used to develop our project was using video chatting apps such as Zoom to help continue and sustain our communication to help complete the challenge. We also approached our project by presenting our perspective of what the project meant to us by sharing our rough drafts of our potential project and communicating ideas that can further get our message across through our image. The tools we used to accomplish our project were the school laptops that provided us the software Microsoft OneNote, Adobe Illustrator, and Paint 3D. These made it possible for us to execute our project to the best of our high standards and expectations. The problems our team had was not being able to communicate to each other as easily.
