The Art of It All

What have you learned about yourself or the world as a result of living through the COVID-19 pandemic? Your challenge is to express your experience of living through this historic time through a work of art.

Together While Apart

Summary

We wanted to capture an image that was relatable and respectful to people across the globe. We wanted it to be bigger than just ourselves and expand on what we thought were quintessential effects that this unfortunate pandemic has brought upon us. Although everyone's situation and hardships very during these tough times there is no doubt that numerous lives have been at risk, opportunities have been missed, and relationships/dreams have been shattered; however, beyond that, there is still hope.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The theme of our project was to convey “what we see” through this global pandemic. It is to no stranger that the primary conflict during this new horizon was obviously COVID-19: a mutated version of SARS. As a result of this virus, billions of lives across the globe have been impacted in a negative fashion and the lives we lost were unimaginable. Thus, we decided to use a gray monochromatic theme across a majority of our artwork to express the bleak outlook we have faced during the past few months- after all, gray felt like a universal color to display tragedy. In that regard, we also felt it was imperative to include an image of 2 hands in which one was fading away in the background of the eye to express the death and loss of a loved one. This was one of the fundamental pieces of our artwork because although it may seem small in stature compared to other components, the 2 hands had a global connection that all, if not most people, can connect with. Furthermore, we wanted to include an image of the virus near the center of the eye to represent the root cause of all these traumas and unfortunate events taking place across the globe. Another key component we included in our artwork was a flame engulfing most of the iris because we thought the fire would perfectly represent destruction and chaos as most fires are portrayed as. Similarly, we wanted to include a teardrop on the outside of the eye to express grief and lost opportunities people have undergone due to strict regulations and guidelines from COVID-19. However, beyond all these tribulations there is one key thing we humans have in common- our tenacity. No matter how bad situations may seem we always have each other, which inspired the last component of our artwork, “we are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided- J.K. Rowling.” This quote fell perfectly in place with our composition because despite all the dilemmas we will always be stronger when we are united and working together to bring this virus down rather than alone. If we can effectively manage to work together and encourage others, there is still hope.

How We Developed This Project

By no means are we artistic prodigies, we’re just 2 kids who wanted to challenge themselves to create a piece of art that would display what most people may be experiencing during this time frame. We knew we wanted to approach this project in a realistic manner because most of the outcome of COVID-19 has been nothing but heartbreaking, yet we wanted to show that at the end of every situation there is still hope. We used empirical evidence provided by the space agency data to convey the numerous lives that were affected and how there were lost opportunities in both jobs and aspiring young adults. In order to achieve this, we decided to use Photoshop and Britannica sources to combine images and symbols we thought would be effective in connecting with our audience. With that said we did face trouble creating images and overlapping certain objects: however, we are proud of the message and overall product we have created.
