Our challenge was to figure out what human factors cause the spread of Covid-19 and to figure out a solution to predict future hot spots. From our analysis we saw that the spread of Covid-19 was mostly from travel. Traveling between countries caused for global spread and traveling within your area caused local spread. From this we saw that there was a higher level of fossil fuel emission when people traveled than when people remained socially distanced.
For our project we plan to take the the CO2 emissions from the NASA satellites and use that to measure whether people in a specific area are social distancing. To show this we aim to make a global map that uses a color coded system to determinate whether an area is producing enough CO2 to prove that they are not staying isolated.
To create our thresholds we used data from before Covid-19 spread and cut it down by almost 6% as most experts believe a 6% reduction of CO2 emissions will be the result of this virus. We then plan to use data from the OCO-2 satellite and read it in daily and update the map using the our thresholds to determine the color of an area. With this map, we are able to show what areas are starting to disregard social distancing and could potentially become a hot spot.
We decided to choose this challenge because we had an initial idea to create a map that could predict where a hot spot would be based on how much social interaction there was in that area although we had no idea how we could achieve this. Through a bunch of ideas including drones, cell phone data, and population, we finally came down to a final idea which would be using the information from the OCO-2 satellite to get CO2 levels in areas and comparing it to our thresholds.
To do this we used excel and R to look at our data and study it and also to pull data in from websites. We also would use HDF5 to handle the data from the OCO-2 data and then we would use different web development languages to put our data out online. We do not really know how to use the HDF5 software to handle the OCO-2 files and we also do not have enough space or resources to handle that amount of data. Because of this we created this idea and made a basic model but not a complete product.
