Human Factors

The emergence and spread of infectious diseases, like COVID-19, are on the rise. Can you identify patterns between population density and COVID-19 cases and identify factors that could help predict hotspots of disease spread?

Exoepi Human Factors Challenge

Summary

We are creating a case study of near science fiction nature using a systems thinking approach to analyze an outbreak aboard the first vessel of Mars base terraformers returning to Earth.

How I Addressed This Challenge

This project will allow space health professionals to think about the epidemiological challenges that could arise as more individuals work in the space environment and move between exoplanets, orbital platforms and Earth.

How I Developed This Project

Two of the team members have extensive public health, epidemiology and immunology backgrounds and the third member is interested in all of the above. We wanted to develop a case study that could be used in our classrooms and in training scenarios. Two of our team members will never forget the day as children when they watched the astronauts of Apollo 11 walk on the moon. They have carried their love of space and space travel forward into their professional careers.  This was a great opportunity to bring space into the classroom.

We have produced a Prezi showcasing our project.
