Human Factors

The emergence and spread of infectious diseases, like COVID-19, are on the rise. Can you identify patterns between population density and COVID-19 cases and identify factors that could help predict hotspots of disease spread?

Identifying COVID-19 HotSpots using Risk Factor Analysis

Summary

To determine the HotSpots of COVID-19, we tried to find a pattern between the area of countries and the volume of inbound tourism in the respective country.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We calculated a risk factor as follows:

Risk factor = (1/Area of country) * (number of arrivals)

Data were filtered with a minimum land area (min 50,000 sq. km) for getting a realistic visualization of the risk factor for countries with a considerable area of land and tourism.

How We Developed This Project

We observed that the spread of the disease is rapid in smaller countries where a considerable amount of people arrive from foreign countries.
