Human Factors

The emergence and spread of infectious diseases, like COVID-19, are on the rise. Can you identify patterns between population density and COVID-19 cases and identify factors that could help predict hotspots of disease spread?

Covid-19 Regional Map

Summary

As provincial governments release-specific data in terms of cases reported regionally, more accurate maps can be produced and made accessible to the public for one to judge the severity of the impact of Covid-19 in their neighbourhood.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The severity of Covid-19 has expanded exponentially among neighbourhoods and nations. Unavailability of data has caused individuals to proclaim the aforementioned risks and avoid listening to governmental advice. Access to a more regional map would allow users to navigate the spread among their local areas, ensuring high proximity of safety measures. By doing so, and spreading awareness, we hope to create proactive change within communities to take an attempt to reduce cases, and recovering the state of our planet. Using data provided by Ontario, we hope to create a map that displays the regional severity of Covid-19 cases over an appropriate time period.

How We Developed This Project

The spread of Covid-19 has truly taken the world by shock, drastically hurting economies, increasing unemployment to record high's but most importantly putting lives of our loved ones in danger. Recent spreads economically hurt us all, and we wanted to give people a way to minimize the impact by creating a tool to raise awareness of cases to prevent distancing and precautionary measures implemented into neighbourhoods. This social act of activism is truly inspired in an attempt to create awareness and education regarding Covid-19. Through this map, we hope to keep the lives of our loved ones around us safe and secure.

In order to develop this project, we decided to create a map displaying cases within local neighbourhoods and on a regional basis. However, with this came the biggest issue of reliable, accurate and up to date data. Recently as we get access to more governmental tools to identify cases by zip code and postal codes, we wanted to visually display such data to make it easier to read and comprehend. We took this reliable data and put it according to a map created by Tableau a third party application, to display the current cases.

The reliability of data is a key focus of our initiative, ensuring our users have access to data that is reliable. We ensure all our data is constantly up to date and gives users the ease of mind in terms of authenticity.

Through our lead developer, we have truly attempted to create a multi-dimensional aspect of a regional solution to create a protective measure to activate social distancing and awareness of Covid-19 within neighbourhoods.
