Our project contains 2 main pages. First is a page that displays night-time satellite imagery from our home states each day since January 1, 2020. This shows the decline in human activity and travel due to COVID-19. Our second page is a social media page where users may share their stories and interact with other stories. This application serves as a foundation of what could be an even larger artifact for social good.
We came across various resources that inspired us to look for information about how people have isolated during COVID-19, and spoke as a team of how we could address isolation especially for those who may not have someone to talk to during this time. Our tech stack is based around Node/Express/AWS with mostly vanilla JS (some D3.js, and jQuery) on the front end.We used the GIBS Imagery API to source the satellite photos and an AWS RDS mySQL instance to store our social media interactions. Our team went through quite a bit of evolution - at times our team was anywhere from 2 to 4 people (eventually only 2, Daniel Flynn and Miriam Harb) and virtually collaborating was something that we learned a ton about. It is also important to note that balancing our personal lives during this pandemic and recent protests/brutality has been a challenge for our team as well.
